Climate and biodiversity: why we no longer have the right to make mistakes?

Côme Girschig - Sustainability conference

Côme Girschig

Since the COP21, the melting of the poles and the disappearance of species have become recurrent media themes. However, climate change and the sixth extinction are complex phenomena on which it is essential to focus in order to avoid making the same mistakes. Why does the melting of the permafrost represent a real danger? What does "rising sea levels" mean? Why does the acidification of the oceans matter to us directly?

The conference will take place in three parts. After giving an overview of the latest scientific findings on climate and biodiversity (based on the work of the IPCC and IPBES), we will understand together the content and effectiveness of international and national policies implemented to try to reduce our impact. We will end with a critical, ethical and philosophical discussion of solutions (geo-engineering, transformation of collective imaginations, reform of the economic model, comparative study of nuclear and renewable energies, etc.), in order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the 19th and 20th centuries.
