Amandine Gay

Amandine Gay is a committed French filmmaker and writer whose work explores issues of identity, gender and diversity.

Amandine Gay is a black, pansexual woman who was born secretly and grew up in a white family in the heart of rural France. This singular life story has shaped her identity from an early age in areas that were as diverse as school, health and the corporate world. Learning to express oneself without putting oneself at risk is a lifelong process, and choosing to 'speak up' can sometimes have harmful consequences in the professional world. This conference is built around the following three extracts:

  • "He is a Black man": The participants talk about the taboo surrounding the word "Black" and the discomfort it can create, even in their professional lives.

  • "Putting on a European accent": This extract shows interviews with young black women in France who are sometimes asked to speak with an "African accent", for example for a role in a film. They reply that there is no such thing as an "African accent", just as there is no such thing as a "European accent".

  • "How far apart are you?” A Muslim participant discusses the concept of "neutrality.

The aim of this conference is to raise employees' awareness of racial stereotypes and their potentially discriminatory consequences in a professional context. To develop empathy for experiences that we are not familiar with.

If the audience is international, Amandine also suggests addressing the following question: "How is the discussion on racism and anti-racism different in France and (the country concerned)?".
