Historical Consciousness and Context Systems of oppression Privileges Safe Space

Cherokee Cierra - Anti racism Conference

Cherokee Cierra

As a Cultural Competency consultant, facilitator, speaker, and Baldwinian abolitionist, Cherokee Cierra has dedicated her personal, academic, and professional identities to the act of dismantling and reimagining systems of oppression through interdisciplinary means.

So you want to be an anti-racist? Well, you’ve come to the right place. This interactive talk is a crash course in Cultural Competency 101 and aims to equip participants with historical knowledge and context, the art of thoughtful questioning, applicable strategies, and the ability to become comfortable with being actively Anti-Racist.

We will tackle everything from theories of Anti-Blackness and important terminology, to DEI frameworks and interrogating our own privileges. During our two hours together, we will unpack the aforementioned topics and various tools of Anti-Racism through a three step approach:

1) Addressing Historical Consciousness by investigating how, where, and why we have built our relationships with history, the past, present, and future.

2) Offering Historical Context by investigating our interpretations of history, our personal "truths," and learned societal "Truths," with historical consciousness and deep empathy in mind.

3) Inviting participants to Unlearn, Learn, Relearn and Reimagine by becoming comfortable with unlearning knowledge and "Truths" to relearn new "truths," and reimagine history, the past, present, and future.

Creating a communal safe space, we will aim to use these strategies to reimagine systems of oppression, find our individual understandings of Cultural Competency, and develop our Anti-Racist identities to become active agents of change.
